Into the Veil Veilwalker Trilogy Book 1 eBook Jennifer R McDonald
Today, I am reviewing the Paranormal story Into the Veil by Jennifer R. McDonald. This is a story in which the world is peopled, in part, by mages who have different abilities – there are conjurors, who can summon objects from other places, there are sirens, who can command the minds of others…and there are also veilwalkers, or gravewalkers, who can leave their bodies and cross into the realms of the dead.I give this book a 4.5/5. Here is my breakdown.
Characters: 5/5. Oh, my, God. Did Jennifer find these people in real life and transcribe their story or something? Each and every character she introduced in this novel felt as real as if I had known them myself. From the twin veilwalkers Lincoln and Lyric to the Hathor family and even Roman himself, the motivations of each were passionate, real, visceral…and they compelled me to read on.
Plot/Storyline: 5/5. Wow. I can only hope that some people find my stories as intriguing as I found this one. Jennifer has developed an in-depth magical society with cohesive and understandable rules, powers, and inclinations. The story never dragged, never felt slow, simply pushed me on and on until, when I reached the end, I had to find if there was a sequel.
P.S. There is!
Flow: 5/5. The story flowed, and flowed well. I was never confused, never distracted. Even when I found issues with spelling or grammar (the next section), the novel was so well put together and structured that I simply noted and moved on, never pulled away from the magic of Jennifer’s world.
Spelling/Grammar: 3/5. As is often the case, this is where Into the Veil fell short. Jennifer seems to have had an issue with apostrophes and homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently). Fortunately, in addition to being the most common issue I see, it is also the most easily corrected, and another edit pass-over or two will fix everything.
Overall: 4.5/5. Absolutely amazing. I have been fortunate to read many new and excellent authors recently, and this story exemplifies that trend. Jennifer has built a world that I enjoy, characters that I care about, and has done so with finesse and aplomb. The world is watching, Jennifer – don’t let us down!

Into the Veil Veilwalker Trilogy Book 1 eBook Jennifer R McDonald Reviews
Deliciously addicting. I found it near impossible to put this book down, opting to forego a few day to day responsibilities in favor of reading the next chapter. Into the Veil follows Lyric, a type of witch referred to as a veilwalker, and her twin brother, Lincoln, as they learn to navigate their way through some sticky situations. In Lyric's world, there are several classifications of witches, as well as other paranormal beings. Lyric, Lincoln, and their father have been on the run for years, hiding from all of them for fear of being assassinated for what they are. Or even worse in Lyric's mind - enslaved and used for their powers. When the Hathor family coven succeeds in capturing her father, Lyric and her brother are blackmailed into serving the Hathors as spies against their enemy. Of course, things turn especially complicated when Lyric finds herself inexcusably drawn toward Aiden, the middle Hathor son and her co-abductor.
While the novel does need some editing work done, this is easily overlooked for its sheer awesomeness of plot, characters, and pacing. McDonald's writing style is superb. I find it hard to believe Into the Veil is her first published novel. Upon finishing the last chapter, I immediately purchased the second in the series, Through the Gloom, and am more than a little elated to find out the third book in the series is forthcoming. Five stars! -But only because I can't give it 6.
** spoiler alert ** This review has spoilers because in order to pick apart this masterpiece of a book, I need to reveal some elements of the book.
The beginning was quite curious. It started off about the twins having a ghost only they can see. Cheesy! I thought, but it was a good kind of cheesy because it is just so interesting. Sure that may be in many other books, but only because it's so entertaining. But here is the twist. The twins are veil walkers and they enthralled a ghost. Cheesy? Not at all. In fact this is quite the original idea. I have NEVER heard of something like this before.
And the fact that Gemma, the enthralled ghost, is so spunky and rude just makes me like her(ironic right?).
So Lyric. The name... OMG <333 I absolutely find the name unique and captivating. It's so exotic and mystical and I LOVE IT. She seems to be the shy one of the group. The dominant twin being Lincoln. But as the story progress, I can't seem to tell who is the dominant one. Lyric matured and grew stronger. Being headstrong and bluntly honest really accelerated her growth too, since it honestly got her into a buttload of trouble.
Lincoln. He is smart, tactful, and the smooth talker of the duo (or trio if you include Gemma). I would have said he was the most mature and responsible out of the two at the beginning, but by the time the book was ended. I think Lyric is the one with that role because she has so much knowledge and with the knowledge she has, she is trying to make the best choice for the both of them. What if their father really is their mother's killer? What if Roman is just the best liar ever? What if Charles is the evil Roman deems him to be?
The creative writing within the novel was exceptional. I can picture the scene accurately and beautifully.
Aiden and Lyric. Even though I would very much like to be Lyric's one true love. I like Aiden and Lyric an item. The attraction is undeniable between them. And their little love scenes are so cute! That's some top notch romance there, and it didn't have to get all hot and steamy.
One thing I find that most indie authors, myself included, cannot seem to completely master, are surprising twists in the story. Most books I read are predictable, but they are still enjoyable. But Jennifer here, has MASTERED the art of plot twists.
First was that Charles and the Hathor family aren't really the evils Lyric and Lincoln were made to believe. I was expecting a hell or living torture for the twins. But it was interesting to see how that surprising twist affected the twins's behavior. Next, wa than Roman Tyr is not the bad guy. WHAT?!!! after making Roman look like Satan incarnate for 87% of the book, I believed it. And that genius of a plot twist was so perfect I did NOT know what to expect of the book. Roman surprisinlgy, seems cordial, honest, and every member of the Tyrs all care about Lyric and have known her mother very well. But as if that plot twist was not enough, now their own father could have the killer?! WHAT!!! *head explosion*
That accusation also had facts to back up their claim! Poor Lyric. SHe is one tough cookie to hold herself together through those massive plot twists. If she could talk, Lyric would ask Jennifer "WHY OH WHY DO YOU MAKE ME SUFFER LIKE THIS!"
And the ending. It doesn't really leave off with a cliff hanger. Instead we are left with a very annoying question that has been constantly niggling me for the whole hour finishing the novel. And even through writing this review, the question of "WHAT THE FREAK IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?!" Is killing me. I am glad to know there is a sequel already out and published and I thank Jennifer dearly for sending me the second installment of her series for free in order for me to review it. It honestly seems more of a favor she is doing for me rather than me to her. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!
The only slightly negative comment I have is this. Lyric and Lincoln are trained fighters. THey have been trained since a young age to fight like badasses and in the training room she proved she is skilled in throwing knives. I would have liked to see Lincoln and Lyric in some action scenes. where they actually put their skill to the test. Hopefully I will see some of that in book 2.
Thank you Jennifer for letting me review your book. Out of all the indie books I've read, there haven't been many authors to receive a rating this high for their books. Congratulations on a fine book. FIVE STARS!!!
