I really wanted to like this book as I admire a romance that wasn't the usual billionaire, Navy SEAL, Russian etc. cliche. I think it was brave of the author to depict a heroine who grew up in a trailer park and runs away with her much younger sister in the hopes of providing a better life for her. I don't expect lottery winning circumstances to occur, but the story was getting too depressing even at over the 50% mark where you don't see any plan in place for circumstances to get better.I would have been okay with just the heroine being able to tread water economically, but what really made me throw my hands up on this story was when the heroine's aberrant behavior is revealed. You learn how in the past she took the safety seals off of bleach jugs in the store and put the caps back on loosely with the hope that some stranger would have bleach spilled on them (it was some weird way for her to get back at the world). Bleach is highly toxic and I cringe thinking of someone (a child or an old person in particular), quickly picking something up and having the liquid splash them in the face or someone next to them. So to have a female lead who has this dangerous behavior (she also is a klepto at a friend's place) makes me think: this character needs to get herself in order before she tries to enter a romance let alone raise a child. So for me, the heroine is just too messed up, making the story line too bleak.

The synopsis of this book interested me. I must say it started out very strong; I was intrigued by the characters and Aubrey's mysterious past. She came off kind of surly to me at first (I felt she overreacted a bit during the incident while playing pool and thought it connected to some abuse in her past, but I was wrong) and I didn't immediately fall for Sawyer. He grew on me. When Aubrey finally got around to letting Sawyer in, their texts were cute and the dialog was fun. I wanted them to get together much faster than it actually occurred. Aubrey kept pushing him away and it made me want to smack her!
Throughout the story we get bits and pieces of Aubrey's past. I was intrigued by all the suspenseful build-up, but when the truth was finally revealed it was done so in a few paragraphs of one chapter in one conversation. I was kind of bummed; I expected a more drawn out process with all the build-up. Then, in the end, it was like the author wanted to finish the story, so what could have been a very dramatic conclusion ended in one chapter with a neat, pretty bow. I wish more time had been spent on the ending.
That said, I did enjoy the story overall. This is the first book by Mimi Strong that I've read, and I would try another.
Review of For You by Mimi Strong
This is a no spoiler review.
Mimi Strong, what can I say about Mimi? She never, ever disappoints, EVER. For You is no exception. I absolutely adored this New Adult romance. It seems no matter what genre she is writing Mimi excels. I know, I know- get on with the book and quit reviewing the author!
For You was a nice change of pace from what I have been reading recently. (smut- don't judge) Don't let that lead you to believe that this book is free of panty-dropping good times, because with a character like Sawyer it's an absolute MUST to have so panty-dropping. (Whew, is it getting hot in here?) Let me sum Sawyer up in just a few words artist, musician, motorcycle riding, tattooed stud muffin. Oh, not to mention sweet, protective, and kind. In love yet? I know I am!!
Aubrey is a struggling single mom with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Mimi did such an amazing job and bringing Aubrey to life. I swear I felt her all of her worries like they were my own. And boy was she stubborn! Thank goodness persistence pays off in the end.
Something else about this book that I just have to mention is that Bell, Aubrey's daughter, hasn't been completely untouched by the things in their past. Even though it is heartbreaking to read some of the things little Bell goes through at school and the things that Aubrey deals with being a single mom, I really enjoyed that Mimi kept it `real' in the fact that Bell wasn't just an adorable kid that was all giggles and smiles with brave faces. She reacts like real kids do when their worlds are turned upside down time and time again - she acts out. And Aubrey reacts like a real mom would - she doubts everything she is doing and feels like a horrible mom. (That is something that EVERY mom can completely relate to... I freakin' love it when I read a book and can say "yep, totally been there done that!")
This is a complete and total FIVE stars for me, it's also gone into my emergency I need a good read to get over the book hangover and/or good book drought list... which means I will be reading this one again!
Review by Mommy's a Book Whore.
I liked this book.I don't see Sawyer as a 'bad boy' because he has a motorcycle and tats and lives with a drugger.I do see him as a nice guy with a funny light sense of humor and,he's biding his time until some thing and some one gives him a focus to commit to.His comebacks to her were flirty funny.I just really liked this guy.He was so refreshing to not be the 'norm' alpha dirty mouth hero in so many books now.
Aubrey was very likeable and the hardship, mystery and fear she was experiencing wasn't overdone.I liked her
too as the protector of Belle and that her angst wasn't to the point where I wanted to slap her.Lately in the books I've read the girl/woman character goes back and forth so much I want yell at my "Crimmeny! Choose what the hell you want to go with already!"
The sex scenes weren't over done for an erotic category .I liked that too.
This is good story.I liked it.
