I enjoyed this book on a number of levels. The characters were multilayered as most human beings are and it showed in the interactions and motives that drove them. I am always reminded of the lack of medical knowledge portrayed by the physician community and cheer the effectiveness of someone who has acquired the gift of working with nature to cure conditions that seem beyond help. I had not been aware of the issue of "clearances" on the estates in Scotland during that time period and, being an idealist, like the idea of those that have trying to relieve some of the suffering.
I would have liked to know how the issue of "clearances" was resolved, if it was, but perhaps that is addressed in one of the other books in the trilogy.
I would definitely read this author again.
I thought I'd read most of this author's work but somehow missed this one. What a gem. I'm really surprised by the truly varied opinions of this book. The h is a widow who'd been badly abused by her late husband and therefore never wishes to marry again. The H is a widower, seriously injured in a fall that killed his first wife. He is rumoured to have pushed his wife over the cliff and killed her. The H's mother arranges a marriage of convenience for the main characters because the h needs money and the H needs someone to care for him. They slowly start a journey of getting to know and respect one another. I really loved this book and loved the relationship between the main characters. Usually I shy away from widow stories as they are usually an excuse for the main characters to have sex without conscience but this isn't the case at all. Secondly I also don't like stories with a plain h and a drop dead gorgeous H but this one is an exception.
I really can recommend this book.
...of two broken souls who find a way to heal each other. A widow is offered a marriage in name only to pay off her debts. In return she is asked only to help her new husband to live when he only wants to die. A beautiful love story. A nice change that the couple acknowledges their need for each other about the middle of the book and have time to develop their relationship. Another conflict takes an equal part in the story.
While I can't vouch for the historical accuracy of Borrowed Dreams after having read the Susan Smith reviews, for me, Borrowed Dreams was well written and an excellent choice for historical romance fans. The narrative flows; the plot is intriguing; and the descriptions are evocative of place and time. The characters are layered and the nuances of their development kept me enthralled throughout. I'm thrilled this is book one of a trilogy so there are more May McGoldrick novels or me to enjoy.
Nikoo & Jim McGoldrick writing as May McGoldrick write a fantastic historical romance novel (Borrowed Dreams) that has depth and quality infused in the story.
Millicent Gregory Wentworth is a courageous, caring, heartfelt, heroine of high morals. She endures years of abuse from her first husband in an arranged marriage. The years of hardship help shape and mold her character, and she becomes a very independent, determined and relieved woman when she is widowed after five years of marriage. Millicent is determined to never get married again because she knows women have no legal rights in marriage.
Lyon Pennington, fourth Earl of Aytoun, is a broken man mentally, physically, and emotionally. He is just about ready to give up on life when his mother, Lady Archibald Pennington, the Dowager Countess Aytoun, shrewdly arranges a marriage for him to none other than Millicent.
A wonderful thing happens when Lyon and Millicent begin to provide what the other needs in this newly arranged marriage. Through a series of challenging events, Lyon and Millicent grow closer and he begins to see the perfect woman for him in her.
I found the characters engaging and their fairy tale relationship endearing. I especially enjoyed Lyon and Millicent's journey toward self-acceptance, and forgiveness (of self and for others).
Nikoo & Jim McGoldrick, writing as May McGoldrick, do a fine job of keeping the story moving and the reader guessing. This is more than just a love story-it is a tale of forgiveness and recovery that will touch your heart. This is a great novel for any reader who enjoys historical romance with an uplifting theme.
I’m so sorry if you listened to Susan Smith. I could not even wait till I finished this book before reviewing it. The book is so interesting and romantic...Ms Smith is full of Sh*@...and condescending to boot. Who cares about whether the husband was a squire or whether his wife is called a lady. She is definitely one in manner...and this is A FICTIONAL NOVEL... not a non-fiction book. I love it ...and I also look for discrepancies but not to the point of missing a great read!! Respectfully, Patricia Pollack
In this book Millicent, who appeared as a battered wife in 'The Promise' is back. She appears as a very compassionate and driven woman who wants to undo all the wrongs who former husband made. She frees all the slaves in her husband's estate, and in the process becomes indebted to a slave owner from Jamaica. In order to save her estate and protect the freed slaves, she has to marry a physically disabled earl (Lyon). Through her dedication and perseverance, she helps Lyon walk again, and in the process, a beautiful romance flourishes. Wonderful book!
