"How you find love means nothing. It's what you do with it when you see it that does."I absolutely loved Flat out Love . So I was so excited to read Flat out Matt. This book was simply a joy to read. I absolutely adore and love geeky Matt and Celeste's voracious vocabulary skills.
The skydiving chapter was just beautiful. Lastly, Jessica Park named the last chapter/epilogue Keep Going and I simply wanted this chapter to keep going.. I wanted more of Julie and Matt.

FlatOut Matt FlatOut Love Book 2 eBook Jessica Park Reviews
Oh good god almighty! Have I mentioned how much I love Matt?
Normally I dislike reading "retelling" stories from the hero's POV. Most authors write male POV's with lots of horney, vulgar "boy" thoughts. While I'm sure this is realistic for most men, I just have no interest in seeing my heroes that way. I like not knowing what they are thinking. I like to assume they are dark, tortured, and torn up by overwhelming love for my heroine, not thinking about how great her ass looks in those jeans.
In Flat Out Matt, Jessica Park pulls off a miracle. She manages to tell Matt's story without taking anything away from his character. He is honestly just as amazing (if not more so) when seen from inside his head.
This story starts before the events of Flat Out Love. We get to see Matt and Finn together on a hike. Seeing them relate really drives how exactly how much Matt lost when his brother died. I loved it!
This intro is followed by Matt's POV on a few of the key events in the original book. It's not a complete telling, just the highlights. It explained some of his reactions throughout the story (like his random prickliness). I thought I loved Matt before, but seeing how much he worried, and how he tried to take care of everyone's needs, while completely discounting his own throughout the story just made me adore him all the more.
The final chapter in this novella is told from Julie's POV, and it's the reason why you should immediately purchase this book. It picks up after the last events of Flat Out Love, and gives us some Matt and Julie "alone time." Some very steamy, swoon worthy alone time.
Ms. Park, thank you for giving us a hero like Matt. The sea of books with of bad boy jerk heroes, it's so refreshing to read a story about a worry-wort, geek like Matt. He's genuine, broken, and utterly perfect.
This is a companion novella to Flat Out Love told from Matt's POV. You need to read the first book before this one and I would recommend reading this soon after Flat Out Love.
There are a few prequel chapters and an 'epilogue' chapter but the content in between are the same chapters as the original told from Matt's POV. We miss several parts of the story and only certain chapters (the ones most important to Matt) are included so it is a bit choppy which is why I recommend not waiting long in between reading the two books. It will make a lot more sense and you won't feel you're missing out on the story as much.
I loved Matt from the first book but this secured him a permanent place in nerd loving heart. Matt is geeky, sweet and so damaged that he thinks he'll never be close to anyone again. He has spent two years taking care of his family and not himself so it's nice to see his interactions from meeting and being around Julie from his perspective.
I loved the ending as it adds a bit to the story from Flat Out Love. Personally, I could keep reading about these characters easily for another novel. They are so fun and quirky, it never got old. If you enjoyed Flat Out Love, I definitely recommend this novella. Just be aware that it is much shorter and does not include the full story (only certain chapters as well as the 'extra' material)
I cried a lot during this book as we finally got to meet Finn and appreciate the great guy he was. Having a window into Matt's broken heart/soul was also heartwrenching so get your tissues ready1
WARNING!!! If you haven’t read Flat Out Love yet, turn around and go read it before you read this review because it will probably spoil things from that book and that book is best enjoyed if you let things play out on its own. And besides this novella will make no sense to you if you try to read it on its own, it is not a standalone.
Ok, assuming you are a Flat Out Love reader and have gotten past my warning, I will start by saying that I really enjoyed this companion novella and I am glad that the author chose to give us these glimpses and additional scenes from Matt’s POV. The first two ‘prequel’ chapters really showed the depth of his relationship with Finn and also the enormous burden that was placed on his shoulders as he was left to try to keep his family afloat after everything went down. You definitely get the sense of his responsibilities in FOL but this book really showcases just how much this poor guy had to deal with. It also really helped to show just how much Julie’s presence in his life affected him. Given the dynamic of their relationship in the first book (I’m being deliberately vague here so as not to truly spoil anything in case you decided to sneak past my warning!) you really didn’t get a sense for the depth of his feelings for her, the chapters that the author chose to show from his POV really solidified that for me and made me fall in love with him too. I also really liked that this novella took us further past where FOL ended, we got to see what happened right after the ending of FOL as well as a bonus chapter from Julie’s POV.
For me companion books can be hit or miss, I like when it’s not a straight retelling especially if you’ve just read the actual book because then it can seem highly repetitive. I really liked how this companion novella gave us just enough of a retelling from the alternate POV so we got to truly understand Matt’s thoughts and motivations but we also essentially got 4 chapters of all new material. If you were a fan of FOL then I would definitely recommend reading this piece as well, it’s totally worth it and really creates that complete story. Now I am excited to reading the true sequel in Flat Out Celeste!
